One Snowy Winter Morning
Sitting around our old wooden table beside the woodstove in the heart our home, our spacious country kitchen, we were joined by the first of our guests to arrive for breakfast. Chuck and his wife were delightful company and we were sorry they would be leaving us that morning. We were surprised at the many persistent, often quite personal questions Chuck asked as we sat together enjoying cups of tea and coffee. When their daughters arrived to join them, I walked them to their table in the dining room and returned to the kitchen. "Do you think he is writing a book?" Alan whispered. Any innkeeper will tell you it is wise to learn to expect the unexpected. The following morning, a lovely email arrived from Chuck thanking us for our hospitality and he then continued to ask additional questions about our life before and during our time in Vermont. However, this time I understood. Mr. Lyons, now revealed his professional interest in us. He is President and Publisher of The Gazette a highly respected newspaper in the Washington, D.C. area and said he wanted to share his experiences at Beckwood Pond with his readers. It was a lovely surprise and I am delighted to share the article with you A Taste of England in the Vermont Countryside.
Our years there were filled with the rewards that come from creating a successful business, welcoming wonderful guests and forming new and lasting friendships. Our community of bed and breakfast innkeepers, farmers and producers, restaurant owners, artists, craftspeople and shopkeepers all worked closely together to ensure that we all prospered while providing the very best the area had to offer for all of our guests. In 2005, before returning to England, we sold the property to a large extended family and it is now once again a family home.
